Dewan Rakyat: RM20.1b 1MDB burden, BUDI95 subsidy cuts face scrutiny
MPs will press the government on the timeline for clearing 1MDB’s outstanding net liabilities - October 28, 2026

THE government’s ability to recover outstanding 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) assets and settle an estimated RM20.1 billion in net liabilities will be among the main issues facing the Finance Ministry in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Lee Chuan How (PH-Ipoh Timor) is scheduled to ask the Finance Minister to detail the expected recovery value of each outstanding claim and the year targeted for full settlement of the liabilities, according to the parliamentary order paper.

The cost and impact of fuel subsidy policy will also come under scrutiny, with Muhammad Fawwaz Mohamad Jan (PN-Permatang Pauh) seeking justification for reducing the subsidised petrol quota under the Budi Madani RON95 (BUDI95) programme from 300 litres to 200 litres before its subsequent increase from Sept 1, 2026.

He will also ask the Finance Minister to disclose the actual fuel subsidy savings achieved this year.

Separately, Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal (PN-Machang) will seek assurances that growing data centre operations will not jeopardise electricity and water supplies for the public, particularly during droughts or supply disruptions.

He is scheduled to ask about contingency plans, restrictions on data centre construction in certain areas, requirements for using recycled water and mechanisms to prioritise essential needs during shortages.

Infrastructure capacity and educational inequality are also on the agenda.

Young Syefura Othman (PH-Bentong) will ask the Works Minister about plans to upgrade federal and state roads in Bentong to accommodate increased traffic following the completion of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL).

Mohd Kurniawan Naim Moktar (BN-Kinabatangan) will seek details of a strategic plan to address prolonged learning loss among pupils experiencing multidimensional extreme poverty, and prevent educational disadvantage from deepening the cycle of poverty.

Following the oral question-and-answer session, the Dewan Rakyat is scheduled to resume the winding-up debate on the Supply Bill 2027 by the relevant ministries. - October 28, 2026
