FORMER Bersatu Port Dickson division chief Badrul Hisham Shaharin, better known as Chegubard, was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment by the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur today for defaming the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Judge Norma Ismail imposed the sentence after finding that the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubt at the end of its case.

However, the court granted a stay of execution pending an appeal at the High Court and increased Badrul’s bail by RM5,000 to RM15,000.

Deputy public prosecutor Nursyuhada Husna Sulaiman conducted the prosecution, while Badrul was represented by lawyer Muhammad Rafique Rashid Ali.

On April 29, 2024, Badrul, who is also Negeri Sembilan coordinator for Parti Wawasan Negara (Wawasan), was charged with making a defamatory statement, knowing or having reason to believe that it could harm the reputation of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

The alleged offence took place at the Office of the Comptroller of the Royal Household at Istana Negara at 6pm on Jan 22, 2024.

The charge was brought under Section 500 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum prison term of two years, a fine, or both upon conviction.

Badrul was acquitted and discharged by the Sessions Court in 2025. However, the High Court subsequently allowed the prosecution’s appeal and ordered the case to be remitted to the Sessions Court for the defence proceedings. - October 28, 2026
