A SENIOR police officer was sentenced to seven years and six months in prison after pleading guilty to a reduced charge over the death of 17-year-old student Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie.

The High Court in Ipoh sentenced Deputy Superintendent Mohd Nazri Abdul Razak after the murder charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code was amended to Section 304(b), which covers causing death without intent to murder.

Judge Datuk Bhupindar Singh Gurcharan Singh Preet ordered the prison term to run from Dec 15, 2023, the date of Mohd Nazri’s arrest. He was also ordered to pay RM50,000 in compensation to the victim’s father.

The amended charge followed the court’s finding of a prima facie case of causing death without intent to murder at the conclusion of the prosecution’s case.

Under Section 304(b), the offence carries a maximum jail term of 10 years, a fine, or both.

Mohd Nazri was accused of causing Muhammad Zaharif’s death at the junction of Jalan Taman Jati 1 and Jalan Pekeliling Meru Indah, near Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Jati, between 11.45am and 12.32pm on Dec 15, 2023.

The victim’s father, Muhd Zamrie Zainal Abidin, 58, attended the proceedings with two other family members and delivered a victim impact statement before sentencing was finalised.

He was visibly emotional as he urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence that would serve as a lesson to society.

Lawyer Mirza Muhaimi Zaidi, who represented the victim’s father as an observing counsel, said outside the court that the family appreciated everyone involved throughout the three-year proceedings.

“We respect the decision of this Honourable Court,” he said.

Mohd Nazri was represented by M Athimulan, Datuk Mior Datuk Mior Faridalathrash Wahid and Aiman Hakim Kamaruzzaman. Deputy public prosecutors Afzainizam Abdul Aziz, Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani and Monisha Pandey led the prosecution. - October 28, 2026
