KUALA LUMPUR – The high court today fixed new dates for the hearing of a RM100 million defamation suit filed by property developer Synergy Promenade Sdn Bhd against former Felda chairman Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad in relation to the government agency’s land.
Lawyer Brian Yee Hong Keet, representing Shahrir, said the hearing will be conducted from June 1 to 3 next year.
The matter was decided during case management conducted via Zoom before justice Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali, he said.
“The earlier hearing dates of October 26 to 28, 2020 were postponed as the conditional movement control order was in force,” he said, adding that April 21 this year has been fixed for case management.
On June 4, 2018, Synergy Promenade sued then Felda chairman Shahrir for issuing allegedly defamatory statements between December 2017 and March 2018 that were published in the mass media, Facebook and YouTube, as well as a news portal.
According to the statement of claim, the company said the remarks had tarnished its reputation, apart from causing it to lose projects that were being worked on.
It is claiming an injunction to prevent the defendant from republishing the statements, as well as compensation of RM100 million, benefits, costs and other suitable relief. – Bernama, March 16, 2021
