PASIR PUTEH – The Agriculture and Food Industries Ministry has approved an allocation of almost RM4 million to upgrade a network of canals in the Kemubu Agricultural Development Authority (Kada) area in Pasir Puteh, this year.

Kada chairman Datuk Kamarudin Md Nor said the project, which had begun, is expected to be completed before the end of the year, to irrigate more than 200ha of padi fields.

“A total allocation of RM2.1 million was used to build canals in Cherang Rotan, involving padi fields in Tok Ajang, Jelor, Kg Nara and Merkang.

“An allocation of RM1.8 million is to upgrade the canals in the padi fields in Jakar, Kg Wakaf and Panggong, which experienced poor water supply to the padi fields, especially during the dry season,” he said.

He said this in a press conference after the Pasir Puteh District Kada Field Day in Tok Ajang here today.

Kamarudin said Kada aimed to increase padi yields from 4.67 tonnes per hectare in 2019 to 6.5 tonnes per hectare in 2028 towards the self-sufficiency level of 75%.

“With these in mind, Kada has formulated a strategy for the Targeted Improved Rice Production project to focus on moderate yielding areas of 2,000ha each year,” he said. – Bernama, March 20, 2021
