KUALA LUMPUR – Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) today urged the government to revive the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) Bill, so as to allow action to be taken against corrupt officers and reform the force.
TI-M president Muhammad Mohan, in a statement, said police’s practices need to be modernised, both from within and outside the force.
“If the corruption crisis highlighted by the inspector-general of police has proven anything, it’s that the matter cannot be treated solely as an internal issue and resolved within police’s ranks.”
An independent oversight mechanism free from political interference in all forms, with the “teeth” to take action against corrupt officers through the ranks, is needed, he said.
He urged the government to push for the IPCMC Bill instead of the watered-down Independent Police Conduct Commission Bill to ensure the required reforms are implemented.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador recently exposed the existence of a “cartel” of young officers seeking to topple him and dominate the police force.
However, he said the matter is under control and can be resolved internally. – Bernama, March 27, 2021
