KUALA LUMPUR – In a possible snub to Umno’s election aspirations, its Muafakat Nasional partner PAS and former ally Bersatu have pledged to form a consultative committee in preparation for the 15th national polls.
In a joint statement today by PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan and Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, they said the two parties in the ruling Perikatan Nasional coalition will devise strategies and direction in view of seat negotiations.
PAS and Bersatu met yesterday following “recent political developments”, referring to the recently concluded Umno general assembly.
“Any decision made in the consultative committee meeting will be brought to the PN supreme council for collective approval.
“Bersatu and PAS firmly reject any new alignment of the government after GE15, especially if it involves Pakatan Harapan and its allies.
“Bersatu and PAS are always committed towards the unity of the ummah and the unity of our diverse communities, and will cooperate with those who abide by this concept.
“Any attempts to undo the present unity and threaten the PN government that we have built together will be rejected.
“Bersatu and PAS urge all Malaysians who love this country, particularly Malay, Islam and Bumiputera societies and organisations, to unite for a better Malaysia,” the statement said.
At the weekend, the Umno leadership had unanimously agreed to quit the PN government pending party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s decision on the implementation of the timeline.
While Umno also resolved to sever ties with Bersatu in the 15th general election, the party remains open to working a deal with PAS under the Muafakat Nasional banner. – The Vibes, March 31, 2021
