KUALA LUMPUR – Former Foreign Ministry secretary-general Tan Sri Ahmad Kamil Jaafar died today at the age of 83.
News on the death of Kamil, who was also part of the G25 group of former senior civil servants, was shared by fellow member Datuk Noor Farida Ariffin.
Noor Farida told Bernama that Kamil, who had health issues, collapsed on the bedroom balcony of his home yesterday evening.
“His remains were brought to Kg Baru Mosque at 10am for prayers. He was laid to rest at the Jalan Ampang Muslim cemetery after Zohor prayers.”
Kamil served as Foreign Ministry secretary-general from 1989 until his retirement three years later, but was reappointed on a contract basis until 1996.
He served as Malaysia’s ambassador to several countries, including Vietnam, Japan and Switzerland, as well as the country’s permanent secretary to the United Nations in Geneva in 1980.
In 2003, he was made the prime minister’s special envoy to the 13th Non-Aligned Movement Summit.
Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah are among those to convey their condolences to Kamil’s family.– Bernama, April 3, 2021
