ALOR STAR – Kedah DAP has urged party leaders not to fall for the negative perception its political rivals are trying to pin on them via deceit and slander along the lines of identity politics.

Instead, DAP central executive committee members such as Ronnie Liu from Selangor DAP, should follow the party constitution that does not single out any particular race, said Kedah DAP vice-chairman Zulhazmi Shariff.

“Kedah DAP will not allow itself to be entrapped by enemies who are building a negative perception towards the party. Our rivals cannot compete with us in terms of service, so they rely on lies and deceit.”

Zulhazmi said he felt compelled to issue a statement after Liu said the party should not dilute its “Chinese-ness”, earning rebuke from Selangor DAP leaders Hannah Yeoh and Tony Pua.

“I think Liu has become confused over his statement that contradicted DAP’s stance. The political crises in the country exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic may have overwhelmed him until he issued a wrong message.

“But Liu is not a newcomer in DAP, he is a veteran, and he should know under the party constitution, DAP defends all Malaysians and the objective of the party is to uphold the democratic values in the country and to be fair to all.

“The formation and struggle of DAP can unite the country from being split apart through the sentiments of race, religion and creed as well as wealth imbalances. This was the legacy left behind by the colonials. DAP is the opposite – it is about uniting the country.”

He added that there are attempts to rewrite the 55-year history of DAP but over time, it is proven that the party is multi-ethnic and in Kedah, its representatives serve the needs of all people here, not just the Chinese. – The Vibes, April 16, 2021.
