KUALA LUMPUR – The Film Directors’ Association of Malaysia (FDAM) has confirmed that the syndicate behind Hari Raya Aidilfitri-themed commercials that promote online gambling is not in its membership records.

President Ahmad Ibrahim said FDAM will not interfere in police’s probe even if the people behind the ads are its members.

The ads in question have cast the country’s creative industry in a bad light, he said in a statement tonight.

“FDAM condemns the parties who are willing to desecrate the sanctity of Ramadan and Syawal, and hurt the feelings of Muslims with the production of the videos.”

He said the association always ensures its members adhere to rules on ethics as outlined in its constitution, with flouters to face action by the FDAM disciplinary committee.

Ahmad urged creatives to follow their respective associations’ rules and the country’s laws.

He called on association leaders to monitor their members, so as to preserve the good reputation of the country’s film industry.

Police have detained 13 individuals in relation to the two commercials. – Bernama, April 18, 2021
