KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia registered 2,078 fresh Covid-19 infections today, with Sarawak again seeing the most cases at 589, said Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
With another eight fatalities, the country’s coronavirus death toll now stands at 1,386.
Three of the new deaths were recorded in Sarawak, two each in Selangor and Sabah, and one in Kuala Lumpur.
In terms of fresh cases, Selangor is behind Sarawak with 457 infections, followed by Kelantan (290), Kuala Lumpur (153), Sabah (125) and Johor (115).
Penang and Negri Sembilan recorded 91 cases each, followed by Kedah (48), Perak (43), Pahang (32) and Melaka (27).
Terengganu logged eight cases, Labuan (6), Putrajaya (2) and Perlis (1).
The latest infections – of which 13 are imported, involving 10 foreigners and three locals – take the country’s total caseload to 377,132.
Dr Noor Hisham reported 1,402 new recoveries, pushing up the overall figure to 355,224.
There are 228 Covid-19 patients in intensive care, with 93 requiring breathing assistance.
Thirteen of the fresh infections are from clusters at detention centres, namely Telo Mas (12) and Tembok Pengkalan Chepa (1).
The country logged 14 new clusters today, making for a total of 1,534 since the pandemic began.
Clusters that have been contained number 1,194, including 12 today, namely Taman Tunku, Jalan Helang, Jalan Delima, Jalan Mega Lima, Jalan Kunci Air, Kg Nyatoh, Jalan PKNK 1/6, Jalan Sikamat Lama, Batu Empat, Jalan Tun Razak, DTI Machap Umboo and Lagenda Suria.
A total of 340 clusters are still active, with 63 recording new cases, led by Sg Duan (62), Kg Domis (55) and Jalan Sulah 16 (42).
Dr Noor Hisham said five of the new clusters involve schools, higher learning institution (1), community (4), religious activity (1) and workplaces (3).
Kelantan recorded the Tangok cluster involving Bachok, Kota Baru and Machang (15 cases), Pulai Chondong cluster involving Machang, Bachok and Pasir Mas (23), and Jalan Hospital cluster in Pasir Mas (50).
Sabah registered the Jalan Tagasan cluster in Semporna (6), while Johor saw the Jalan Medan Aliff cluster in Johor Baru (9), Jalan Cahaya Baru cluster in Batu Pahat (20) and Cyber Park cluster in Kulai (9).
Kedah saw the Jalan Weng cluster in Baling (11) and Bayan Cenderawasih cluster in Kota Setar (10).
Sarawak recorded the Sg Duan cluster in Mukah (84), a yet unnamed cluster involving Matu and Sibu (49), and the Sg Selitut cluster involving Bintulu and Tatai (18).
Perak registered the Jalan Bandar Universiti cluster involving Perak Tengah and Manjung (13), while Selangor saw the Jalan Sulah 16 cluster in Klang (46). – The Vibes, April 19, 2021
