GEORGE TOWN – An unemployed man was charged in magistrates’ court here today on charges of hitting a Foodpanda rider on Tuesday.

Muhammad Aslam Hashim, 31, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him before magistrate Jamaliah Abd Manap.

According to the charge sheet, Aslam was alleged to have caused injury to Koay Eng Tat by hitting him on the head with a hammer.

He was charged with committing the offence at the Desa Permai Indah apartment in Sg Dua, here, at 4pm last Tuesday.

Aslam was charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum jail term of 10 years, or a fine, or caning, or any two of these punishments, if convicted.

Jamaliah allowed Aslam bail of RM4,000 with one surety and set May 25 for remention of the case and the appointment of a lawyer for the accused.

Deputy public prosecutor Yazid Mustaqim Roslan prosecuted.

The Vibes previously reported that a food-delivery rider received nine stitches on the head as a result of being hit with an iron hammer by the husband of a customer.

The altercation is believed to have started after the suspect took offence after the rider allegedly scolded the suspect’s wife.

It is understood that the 40-year-old Foodpanda rider had been waiting and trying to contact the customer for half an hour to collect the food.

Kuih-seller charged with killing cop on bike

Meanwhile, a kuih-seller was charged in the magistrates’ court here today over the death of a policeman last Saturday.
 
No plea was recorded from the accused, Mohd Arafat Taufik, 35, after the charge sheet was read in front of magistrate Jamaliah Abd Manap.
 
He was charged with causing the death of Constable Muhammad Iqbal Mazlan by riding a motorcycle dangerously, hitting the motorcycle the policemen was on from the side, such that the victim fell and died.
 
He was charged with committing the offence at Jalan Utama between 1am and 2am on April 17.
 
He was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
 
Arafat was represented by lawyer G. Shanmugam while the prosecution was handled by Yazid Mustaqim Roslan.
 
Jamaliah set June 23 for remention and the documentation process.
 
The Vibes had previously reported a policeman was killed while chasing a motorcyclist behaving suspiciously at Jalan Utama.
 
Iqbal, 20, along with two other policemen on patrol, chased the motorcyclist before the incident occurred.
 
Northeast district police chief Soffian Santong was reported to have said the suspect tested positive for drugs, and also had 11 criminal records involving various offences. – The Vibes, April 23, 2021
