A 26-YEAR-OLD woman was killed when the Perodua Axia she was driving was struck by a trailer at a traffic-light junction along Jalan Machang-Tanah Merah last night.

The crash occurred at about 10.30pm at Kilometre 4.7 of the road, near the Wakaf Bata traffic-light junction.

Machang district police chief Superintendent Azuhar Md Nor said preliminary investigations found that the Volvo trailer, driven by a 47-year-old local man travelling from Tanah Merah towards Machang, allegedly ran a red light before hitting the right side of the car.

The Axia was travelling from Padang Kelupang towards Tanah Merah when the collision occurred.

“The impact caused severe injuries to the Perodua Axia driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene,” he said in a statement.

The trailer driver was uninjured, while the victim’s body was sent to Hospital Sultan Ismail Petra in Kuala Krai for a post-mortem.

Azuhar said the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

The trailer driver was also arrested under Section 30 of the Poisons Act 1952 after police seized four transparent plastic packets containing a brownish liquid suspected to be kratom (ketum) water.

Police urged anyone with information about the crash to contact Machang district police headquarters traffic investigating officer Inspector Khairulanwar Adamb at 011-10085165 or visit the nearest police station. - October 20, 2026
