[UPDATED] Covid-19: 11th day above 2,000 mark with 2,690 new cases

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia continues to record daily Covid-19 cases above the 2,000-mark, the latest being 2,690 fresh cases.

This is the 11th straight day fresh cases have been above the 2,000-mark since April 14, with the total number of infections since the start of the outbreak last year now at 392,942.

Ten fatalities were recorded nationwide, bringing the virus death toll to 1,436.

According to Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, Selangor recorded the highest number of infections today with 751 cases.

Cumulatively, the state has logged the most cases in the country with 127,260.

Sarawak had the second-highest number of infections today with 595, followed by Kelantan (424), Kuala Lumpur (217), Johor (159), Sabah (121) and Penang (117).

Of the fresh cases today, 10 are imported, Dr Noor Hisham said in a statement.

He said 1,853 individuals have recovered from the virus, bringing the cumulative recoveries to 367,753.

These latest figures mean there are now 23,753 active cases.

He also said 283 individuals are in intensive care, of which 121 require breathing support.

Meanwhile, Dr Noor Hisham said the ministry has identified eight new clusters today, three of which originated from workplaces; three from the education sector, including two Education Ministry institutions; one detention centre, and one community cluster.

The three construction site clusters are Putai in Sarawak (243 cases), Ladang Paris Dua in Sabah (13), and Jalan Melaka Raya in Melaka (10).

The three education sector clusters are Jalan Bukit Naga (18 cases) and Jalan Kuala Garing (five) in Selangor, and Halban Dua in Kelantan (63).

One detention centre cluster – Pagar Sri Lalang in Johor – has 16 infections, while the other is a community cluster, Rayang in Sarawak (50).
