KUALA LUMPUR – The government understands the need for Parliament to reconvene, but the main focus is still addressing the Covid-19 pandemic in the country, said Law Minister Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan.
Takiyuddin in a statement today said the government has assured that Parliament will sit when the time is right, whether before or after the emergency ends on August 1.
This decision will depend on advice and opinions from experts, in particular those in the Health Ministry and National Security Council, he added.
“The government is acutely aware of its constitutional responsibilities to ensure the country’s democratic proses is guaranteed through Parliament.
“However, the priority at the moment is to ensure the pandemic is fully under control, including protecting the health of MPs, officers and all other parties dealing with Parliament.”
In the meantime, Takiyuddin said, all quarters, including the opposition, can voice their opinion through existing channels, such as the independent special committee on the emergency.
His statement today comes amid further pressure from MPs, political parties and the general public for the August house to reconvene and emergency lifted.
Many have highlighted that the emergency has failed to address the Covid-19 crisis, with cases continuing to climb, leading to lockdowns and forcing several schools to close nationwide.
The Perikatan Nasional administration has been accused of abusing its powers, among others, via the various emergency ordinances, which give the government unfettered powers to use funds and take enforcement action.
Takiyuddin said this suspicion that the government is misusing its powers is unwarranted, noting that existing systems – including the monitoring of administrative functions by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, National Audit Department and Public Accounts Committee – is still functioning as usual.
“As such, all quarters are urged to provide full cooperation to the government in its effort to ensure the rakyat’s livelihood and survival.”
The Agong has decreed that Parliament can reconvene during the emergency. – The Vibes, April 26, 2021
