KUALA LUMPUR – Five telecommunications industry players, namely Celcom, Digi, Maxis, U-Mobile and Telekom Malaysia Bhd, have agreed to extend the provision of 1GB of data for free daily to all customers until July 31.
In a statement today, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission said this has been in place since April last year, with the aim of helping people cope with the “digital norms” amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
There have been several extensions, and the latest had been due to end today.
“The further extension is to provide additional support to the people, courtesy of telecommunications companies, as the Covid-19 situation in the country is still unstable,” said MCMC.
“It is especially to help students switch back to home-based learning after the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, as announced by the Education Ministry recently.”
The free 1GB data daily is in addition to existing subscription packages, and can be used to access videoconferencing platforms and manage teaching materials via email without time restrictions.
It does not apply to social media browsing, regular video streaming, music streaming and online games.
Meanwhile, YTL Communications Sdn Bhd said it, too, will continue to support students’ education by extending its Learn From Home initiative until September 30.
Under the initiative, students from B40 families get a SIM card with 40GB of data, and a smartphone. – Bernama, April 30, 2021
