JOHOR BARU – Two juvenile elephant carcasses were found on a vegetable farm near the Kahang dam and Kluang Forest Reserve in Kluang yesterday, believed to have been poisoned.

State Malaysian Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) director Salman Saaban in a statement today said the department received a public complaint about the discovery of the carcasses around 5pm.

“Initial investigation found that the carcasses involved two juvenile elephants, estimated to be between 5 to 6 years old.

“No traces of gunfire were found on the heads or bodies.”

Based on the condition of the carcasses, Salman said, it is believed that the female mammals died within a week or two due to poison ingestion.

They were supposedly from a herd of elephants comprising 25 to 30 members, which often roam around the area in search of food, he added.

He said his department has taken samples from the remains to identify the true cause of death before they are disposed of. – The Vibes, May 5, 2021
