KUALA LUMPUR – Desperate to get a permit for interstate travel, a 65-year-old man impersonated a cop at the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters on Friday.
About 9pm that day, the man, a local, walked into the station claiming to be an assistant commissioner with the Datuk title, with a photo of him in full uniform displayed on his mobile phone.
He failed to produce documentation to prove he really was a police officer, and was then detained by cops on duty.
The man has been remanded for a day and is being investigated under Section 170 of the Penal Code for impersonating a public servant. He faces a maximum of two years in prison, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
Petaling Jaya police chief Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid in a statement warned that impersonating a government servant is a serious offence.
