GEORGE TOWN – Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has urged all Malaysians to register for the Covid-19 immunisation programme to help the country contain the pandemic.
In a special Hari Raya Facebook live exchange, the Langkawi MP said getting vaccinated is the first step towards regaining control of their lives from the virus.
He also urged everyone in the country to be cautious while celebrating Aidilfitri in the midst of the pandemic
“I hope everyone can adhere to the government’s standard operating procedures (SOPs) to break the pandemic chain.”
He advised against physical greetings during Raya as well.
“Normally, we gather on Hari Raya celebrations and salam each other but now the situation is different due to the pandemic.”
Hari Raya gatherings at home are allowed with limited people in the government’s latest SOPs.
In the video, visitors to Dr Mahathir’s residence can be seen scanning the MySejahtera QR code getting their temperature checked before entering.
In a separate matter, an investigation paper has been opened after Dr Mahathir Mohamad violated the health SOPs during a visit to his constituency early this month.
He yesterday admitted and apologised for not adhering to the SOPs, but Langkawi district police head Shariman Ashari said an investigation needs to be carried out to determine if there was negligence.
A video clip has been widely shared showing Dr Mahathir failing to scan the MySejahtera QR code and checking his temperature before entering a surau at Kuala Teriang.
Shariman said the investigation will be conducted in accordance with Section 269 of the Penal Code and Regulation 16 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures) in Local Areas of Infection 2021. – The Vibes, May 13, 2021
