KOTA KINABALU – The hunt continues for two out of nine escaped immigration detainees who fled the temporary detention centre in Menggatal early yesterday.
Sabah police chief Datuk Hazani Ghazali said police have intensified their operations, which now includes General Operations Force personnel.
He called on the public not to panic and to immediately inform the police of any suspicious individual near their area.
Nine detainees aged between 20 and 40 were spotted climbing the walls to escape yesterday.
Immigration officers managed to stop three of the detainees from climbing over the wall, while six others managed to escape.
A manhunt was immediately launched with the help of the police, K-9 units, and the Immigration Department.
At around 8pm, security forces managed to apprehend four of the escapees at a nearby village.
Earlier, several inmates at the immigration detention depot in Menggatal caused a disturbance because they were not allowed to return to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
The Light Strike Force from the Kota Kinabalu Police Contingent (IPD KK) was immediately mobilised to control the situation. – The Vibes, May 14, 2021
