KUALA LUMPUR – Johor Pakatan Harapan (PH) is offering free legal aid to individuals involved in the recent anti-government demonstrations at Jalan Parit, Batu Pahat on May 13.
Johor PH contends that the rioting incident is a manifestation of the Malaysians’ discontent with Putrajaya’s failure to address national issues, including the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Due to this failure, the people continue to feel pressured by the rising standard of living as well as the double standards in implementing policies which victimise ordinary Malaysians,” the statement said.
Johor PH also took the opportunity to urge the government to reconvene Parliament and the state assembly, to allow debate and implement policies for the good of the people.
According to previous reports, so far 20 have been arrested over their involvement in the riot.
Batu Pahat police chief Ismail Dollah said the suspects are aged between 16 and 28 years old, and have no previous criminal records.
All 20 men have been remanded for four days until May 17.
The incident which happened at a junction in Parit Raja, saw a group of 40 people blocking a road with their vehicles while burning flares and holding up a banner with the words ‘Kerajaan Gagal’. – The Vibes, May 15, 2021
