[UPDATED] Covid-19: M’sia records highest daily death toll with 45 lives lost

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia logged 4,446 Covid-19 cases today, bringing the nation’s virus tally to 474,556.

The Health Ministry (MoH) also reported 45 deaths due to the virus today. This is the highest daily death toll from Covid-19 seen by the country so far.

This brings the total grim number of lives lost in Malaysia due to the pandemic thus far to 1,947.

All the deceased were Malaysians except for one 86-year-old male who passed away at Sg Buloh Hospital.

The youngest recorded death today was a 36-year-old female who also had pre-existing conditions of asthma and obesity. She passed away at Keningau Hospital, Sabah.

Yesterday, the country saw a slight drop in infections to below the 4,000-mark at 3,780 cases. Any expectations that the figures were dropping were dashed when the number rose again today.

Selangor continues to record the highest number of cases in the country with 1,650 new cases today, followed by Sarawak (433 cases), Johor (391), Kelantan (343), Kuala Lumpur (297), Negri Sembilan (243), Kedah (236), Perak (203), Terengganu (201), Penang (159), Pahang (139), Melaka (80), Sabah (60), and Putrajaya (11).

Labuan and Perlis, meanwhile, registered no new infections today.

According to the ministry’s daily press statement today, 522 patients are currently being treated in intensive care units, with 273 requiring ventilator support.

Meanwhile, with regard to clusters, 484 remain active, including the 14 new ones identified today.

Seven of the new clusters concern communities in Kelantan, Pahang, Sarawak, and Sabah.

The Taman Repek cluster, Kampung Kual cluster, and Kampung Perah cluster in Kelantan cumulatively registered 46 infections in total.

In Pahang, the Kampung Paya Teh cluster and Taman Jati cluster logged a total of 81 cases.

For Sarawak, the Jalan Jambusan cluster logged 17 cases, while the Jalan Imam Jalilul cluster in Sabah registered 11.

Additionally, the MoH also reported four clusters involving religious activities in Selangor, Johor, Sabah, Perak, and Kuala Lumpur.

The Kundang Jaya cluster in Selangor registered 26 infections, the Sungai Langgas cluster in Sabah recorded 19 infections, and the Parit Kassan Jegol cluster in Johor saw 22 cases.

Meanwhile, the Jalan Kuak Luar cluster covering parts of Perak and Kuala Lumpur registered 22 infections.

As for worksite clusters, the MoH reported three involving parts of Selangor and Kedah.

The Jalan Jambu Bol and Jalan Kusta clusters in Selangor registered 82 cases cumulatively, while the Dah Serdang cluster in Kedah logged 16 cases. – The Vibes, May 17, 2021
