KUALA LUMPUR – Selangor’s Covid-19 situation is showing no sign of easing, with the state logging 1,743 fresh infections today.

The figure is more than a third of the 4,865 new cases recorded nationwide, said Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The nation also saw another 47 coronavirus deaths today, making for a total of 1,994 fatalities since the pandemic began.

Of the 47 fatalities, a staggering 18 took place in Selangor, and five each in Sarawak and Penang, four each here, in Johor and Kelantan, three in Perak, two in Pahang and one each in Kedah and Negri Sembilan. 

The latest infections take Malaysia’s virus tally to 479,421, with Selangor recording a total of 157,056.

Sarawak has the second-highest caseload at 512, followed by Kuala Lumpur (477), Johor (407), Kelantan (406), Kedah (244), Penang (220), Perak (160), Terengganu (156), Pahang (152), Negri Sembilan (149) and Melaka (127).

Seeing fewer than 100 new cases are Sabah (95), Putrajaya (9), Labuan (6) and Perlis (2). 

In a statement, Dr Noor Hisham said 3,497 individuals have recovered from the virus, bringing the cumulative recoveries to 432,600. 

This takes the number of active Covid-19 cases at present to 44,827. 

There are currently 531 infected people who have been admitted to intensive care units, of whom 277 require breathing support. 

There are an additional 466,020 individuals who are either patients under investigation or are close contacts of Covid-positive persons. 

The Health Ministry has also identified 19 new Covid-19 clusters nationwide, of which seven originated from workplaces, five are related to religious activities, four are community clusters, and three involve the education sector. 

This brings the cumulative number of clusters since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,920, with 497 of them still active. – The Vibes, May 18, 2021
