MIRI – The Sarawak government is expected to strengthen Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) amid a deterioration in the coronavirus situation in the state.
The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee said the new guidelines will be announced tomorrow.
The state recorded 663 new Covid-19 cases today, and three fresh fatalities. It also registered four clusters – two linked to Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations, and two to longhouses.
Its three biggest districts – Kuching, Miri and Sibu – recorded more than 100 cases each today.
The new deaths involve two men, aged 64 and 68, in Sibu Hospital, and a 73-year-old woman in Bintulu Hospital.
“With the latest fatalities, the Covid-19 death toll in the state has reached 252,” said the committee.
The two new clusters related to Hari Raya celebrations are the Taman Sourabaya cluster, which saw nine people infected in a neighbourhood, and Kg Jambatan Gantung cluster, which saw another nine infected. Both clusters are in Kuching.
The Sg Mujah cluster in Kanowit, involving a longhouse, saw 26 residents contract the virus, and the Bukit Temeduk cluster in Pakan saw 34 longhouse folk infected.
The committee said contact tracing and screening are being carried out in the new outbreak zones.
There are currently 84 clusters in Sarawak.
Out of the 663 new cases today, Sibu recorded the highest number with 112, followed by Kuching (105), Miri (103), Belaga (43), Bintulu (37), Betong (29), Serian (29), Selangau (26), Pakan (23) and Samarahan (22), while other districts have fewer than 20 each. – The Vibes, May 23, 2021
