KUALA LUMPUR – Surendran Shanker is the latest name to be added to the list of custodial deaths in Malaysia.
The 21-year-old died this morning at Kluang Hospital, less than a month after being transferred to Simpang Renggam Prison, reported Free Malaysia Today.
His death comes exactly a week after security guard S. Sivabalan died in custody at the Gombak police station.
FMT sighted a police report lodged by a prison official stating that Surendran died due to “septic shock with multiple organ failure”.
He was taken to hospital after complaining of severe abdominal pain.
Surendran’s mother, Kumatameri Asirvatham, believes there are elements of foul play in her son’s death, as he was young and healthy.
Police arrested Surendran in Petaling Jaya in June last year. He was later detained under the Prevention of Crime Act.
In August, he was sent to the Muar rehabilitation centre, where his family last saw him, and then transferred to Simpang Renggam Prison on April 25.
His family was informed by the prison about 4.30pm yesterday that Surendran was suffering severe stomach pain and admitted to Kluang Hospital.
They called the hospital, and were told that he was in critical condition.
Surendran’s cousin, Surenthar Richard, found out from the hospital that the victim’s condition had worsened.
