PUTRAJAYA – The Home Ministry has directed the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and relevant authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation into deaths in custody following the stipulated procedure under the law.
In a statement today, it said the ministry, via PDRM, will improve the standard operating procedure on the detention of suspects in lock-ups from time to time to ensure deaths in custody do not recur.
This comes after the ministry received a memorandum on deaths in custody from a Pakatan Harapan representative yesterday.
The memorandum, among others, wanted a special independent task force to be set up to investigate the recent deaths of two detainees – A. Ganapathy and S. Sivabalan.
Authorities said the deaths are due to health issues that have been confirmed by hospital.
The ministry said all investigations into such cases will be conducted fairly and transparently based on existing laws.
