IPOH – The Perak government will reopen the homeless transit centre (PPG) from early June in a move to avoid triggering new Covid-19 clusters.
State Women Development, Family and Social Welfare Committee chairman Datuk Wan Norashikin Wan Noordin said it was also in line with the first phase of the nation’s total lockdown from Tuesday until June 14.
“The PPG at the Red Crescent Hall in Jalan Kompleks Sukan can accommodate 40 homeless people and will be opened quickly with the announcement of the government.
“The process to persuade the homeless group to go to the PPG will be headed by the Perak police, together with several other agencies such as the Welfare Service Department, the Health Ministry, the Ipoh City Council and the Malaysian Armed Forces.
“We will perform Covid-19 screenings on the homeless, besides providing better shelter and health care to boost their quality of life,” she said.
Speaking to reporters after visiting the PPG today, Wan Norashikin said the homeless would also be vaccinated after the completion of the Covid-19 screening.
It was reported on April 19 last year that the state government had opened the PPG in Perak, namely at the Perak Badminton Arena here, but it had been turned into a low-risk Covid-19 quarantine and treatment centre. – Bernama, May 30, 2021
