[UPDATED] Almost 4-fold surge in Labuan as M’sia logs 7,748 Covid-19 cases

KUALA LUMPUR –  Malaysia logged 7,748 fresh Covid-19 infections today, a slight drop from the over-8,000 cases yesterday.

The Health Ministry said the new cases take the nation’s cumulative tally to 603,122.

Selangor continues to log the highest number of cases at 2,612, followed by Kuala Lumpur (851), Negri Sembilan (709), Sarawak (706), Johor (446), Penang (376), Perak (371), Sabah (287), Kelantan (286), Kedah (263) and Melaka (234).

Labuan, meanwhile, saw an almost four-fold surge in infections in the past 24 hours, recording 230 cases today from 62 yesterday.

Terengganu recorded 203 cases, while Pahang has 146, Putrajaya has 20 and Perlis, eight.

The nation registered 6,624 Covid-19 recoveries, while 883 patients remain in intensive care and 459 require breathing support.

It also recorded 86 fresh fatalities, following two straight days of triple-digit deaths, taking the death toll to 3,182.

The oldest coronavirus victims today are two 101-year-old women. One, who had a history of heart disease, high blood pressure and dyslipidaemia, died at Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Baru, Johor, while the other with no history of comorbidities died at Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

The youngest victim today is a 26-year-old woman who had no history of comorbidities and died at Labuan Hospital.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah confirmed that 19 Covid-19 cases today involved variants Beta (South African) and Delta (Indian), which have been detected in the country between May 24 and today. Both are classified as variants of concern.

The Beta variant logged 15 cases – six in Johor, five in Kelantan and one each in Kedah, Melaka, Kuala Lumpur and Terengganu.

The Delta variant logged four cases, involving three in Labuan and one in Kuala Lumpur.

Dr Noor Hisham said the country has logged a total of 2,284 clusters, including 23 new ones today.

Of the overall number, 1,593 clusters have ended, leaving 691 still active.

Dr Noor Hisham said of the new clusters, 12 are related to the workplace, seven are from the community, while two each are from religious and educational activities.

Selangor’s Persiaran Mercu education cluster in Hulu Langat recorded 47 cases, while Penang’s Jalan Bandar Baru workplace cluster in Seberang Prai Selatan has 40.

Negri Sembilan logged the Jalan Tampin-Gemas workplace cluster in Tampin with 36 cases, while Johor registered the Jalan Keluli 3 workplace cluster in Johor Baru with 27. – The Vibes, June 4, 2021
