KUALA LUMPUR – Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, in brief social media posts today, has hinted at the reconvening of Parliament.

She said an online meeting chaired by the Dewan Rakyat speaker discussed issues linked to preparations for a sitting.

This comes amid excitement at Istana Negara, where the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is meeting political party presidents starting today, with Parliament reconvening and ending the emergency declared over Covid-19 believed to be the main topics of discussion.

After meeting the king this morning, opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he requested that the state of emergency not be extended beyond August 1.

The emergency has been hard on the people, especially the poor, he said.

“It is only causing losses for the country,” he told the press at Gate 2 of Istana Negara.

“We plead for His Majesty to avoid extending the emergency as much as possible.”

On Parliament reconvening, the PKR president said the Agong previously decreed that sittings can be held, provided that the government agrees.

“I have to explain this because there are different perceptions on this issue, as if Parliament should not be reconvened.”

Anwar expressed gratitude to the king for granting him an audience to share his views on current issues.

Prime Minister and Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin was the first to have an audience with the Agong today, arriving at Istana Negara at 7.47am. He left at 8.55am. – The Vibes, June 9, 2021
