[UPDATED] Covid-19: 5,671 new cases, 911 in ICU, 73 deaths

KUALA LUMPUR – The nation’s daily Covid-19 tally dipped to 5,671 today, making for a total of 639,562 infections since the pandemic began.

Selangor leads with 1,510 fresh cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur (769), Sarawak (631), Negri Sembilan (593), Johor (524), Kedah (309), Kelantan (262) and Sabah (233).

Melaka saw another 184 cases, Penang (166), Perak (143), Pahang (112), Terengganu (108), Labuan (106), Putrajaya (18) and Perlis (3).

The Health Ministry reported 73 new coronavirus deaths, pushing up the toll to 3,684.

There are 911 patients in intensive care, of whom 462 require breathing aid.

Overall recoveries stand at 556,030 with the 7,325 registered today.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said of the 73 new deaths, 29 were in Selangor, Johor (11), Negri Sembilan (8), Kedah, Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Penang (4 each), Pahang (3), Kelantan (2), and Melaka, Sabah, Terengganu and Perak (1 each).

The oldest victim is a 104-year-old woman with a history of dislipidemia, who died at Lam Wah Ee Hospital in Penang. The youngest is a 13-year-old girl, who suffered from chronic kidney disease and systemic lupus erythematosus, and who died at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Star.

The country has seen a total of 2,422 clusters, including 22 reported today. Of the overall figure, 1,677 have been contained, leaving 745 still active.

Of the fresh clusters, said Dr Noor Hisham, 18 are related to the workplace, community (3) and religious centre (1).

“The Health Ministry would like to update that from May 13 to June 10, there have been at least 60 festival-related clusters originating from Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations (58) and Hari Gawai (2).

“As many as 13,023 individuals were tested, with 3,511 Covid-19 cases identified, making for a positivity rate of 27%.

“Of these cases, 20 deaths were reported. At present, 11 cases are in intensive care.”

The states with the most festival-related clusters are Sabah with 11 (18.3%), Sarawak with eight (13.3%) and Kedah with seven (11.7%).

Today, Kuala Lumpur recorded the Jalan Kolam Air construction site cluster in Kepong with 131 cases, while Selangor’s Jalan SS Lapan Empat workplace cluster in Gombak, Petaling, Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat, Kuala Selangor, Klang, Sepang, Lembah Pantai and Putrajaya recorded 71.

Selangor also saw the Jalan Tiga Salak Tinggi workplace cluster in Sepang and Hulu Langat with 70 cases.

Johor registered the Ploteknologi workplace cluster in Muar and Tangkak with 49 cases, while Negri Sembilan recorded the Kg Lakai workplace cluster with 50.

Selangor’s Alam Jaya Dua cluster in Kuala Selangor and Gombak logged 62 cases, while its Industri Balkong Tujuh cluster in Hulu Langat, Petaling and Gombak has 36, and the Sg Rasau cluster in Klang, Petaling and Kuala Langat, 35.

Sarawak recorded two community clusters, namely the Bali Pie cluster in Subis and Miri, and the Jalan Samarakan cluster in Tatau, with 62 and 49 cases, respectively. – The Vibes, June 10, 2021
