[UPDATED] Covid-19: new cases dip below 5,000, 921 in ICU, 60 deaths logged

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s new Covid-19 cases have declined below 5,000 for the first time in almost a month, with 4,949 infections recorded today.

Selangor is in the lead with 1,523 fresh cases, followed by Sarawak (744), Kuala Lumpur (503), Johor (430), Negri Sembilan (323) and Sabah (273).

Penang and Kelantan have 214 cases each, followed by Kedah (199), Perak (136), Melaka (119), Labuan (113), Terengganu (86), Pahang (61), Putrajaya (10) and Perlis (1).

The last time the country saw daily cases below 5,000 was on May 18, when 4,865 infections were logged.

Thus far, Malaysia has recorded a cumulative 662,457 cases.

The Health Ministry reported another 60 Covid-19 deaths, taking the total to 3,968, while 6,588 new recoveries push up the overall figure to 586,864.

Of the 921 Covid-19 patients in intensive care, 459 require breathing aid.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said of the new deaths today, 18 are in Selangor, nine in Johor, eight in Kuala Lumpur, seven in Negri Sembilan, six in Sarawak and four in Labuan.

Penang and Kelantan recorded two deaths each, while Perak, Melaka, Terengganu and Sabah one each.

Dr Noor Hisham said the country recorded 2,494 clusters, so far, including 17 new ones today. A total of 1,270 clusters have ended, while 774 remain active.

Of the total, 1,328 are workplace clusters, with 624,246 individuals screened, of which 147,040 (26.6%) were found to be positive.

Dr Noor Hisham said active workplace clusters with the highest number of cases are the Jalan Tiga Salak cluster in Selangor with 873 cases, Industri Senawang cluster in Melaka and Negri Sembilan (752), Industri Batu Berendam in Melaka (641), Jalan Padang Tembak cluster in Kelantan and Terengganu (598), and Tok Has cluster in Terengganu (541).

Of the new clusters, 12 are from workplaces, four from the community and one from a high-risk group.

Selangor’s Sg Pinang Papan cluster in Klang and Petaling recorded 75 cases, while its Persiaran Usahawan cluster in Sepang, Hulu Langat and Kuala Langat has 57; Industri Subang Tujuh cluster in Petaling (37); Industri Jalan Makmur cluster in Gombak and Kuala Selangor (26); and, Industri Jalan Tengah Empat cluster in Gombak (11). All are related to workplaces.

Johor recorded four workplace clusters, namely the Perindustrian Bakri Lima cluster in Muar with 70 cases, Jalan Aik Hwa Choon cluster in Muar (30), Walit Agas cluster in Muar and Tangkak (25), and Jalan Minyak Beku cluster in Batu Pahat (15).

Kelantan’s Batu Empat Tunjong workplace cluster in Bachok, Kota Baru, Pasir Mas and Pasir Puteh recorded 29 cases, while its Industri 5084 Pengkalan Chepa workplace cluster in Kota Baru has 12; Kg Berangan Apam community cluster in Pasir Mas (8).

Kuala Lumpur recorded the Persiaran Pertahanan workplace cluster in Titiwangsa with 115 cases.

Sarawak’s Sg Sentebu community cluster in Sarikei recorded 48 cases, while its Ulu Sangan community cluster in Tatau has 12. Perak recorded the Kg Senggang community cluster in Kuala Kangsar with 18 cases.

Finally, Negri Sembilan recorded the Jalan Bukit Delima high-risk group cluster in Seremban with 28 cases. – The Vibes, June 14, 2021
