PETALING JAYA – Two Indonesian men were today sentenced by the magistrates’ court here to 20 days’ imprisonment each for violating the movement control order by continuing to work at a snooker centre.
Magistrate Muhammad Iskandar Zainol meted out the punishment to Vinoris Mendonca Amaral, 27, and Yuvanalis Manek, 26, after they pleaded guilty to failing to comply with government directives aimed at containing Covid-19.
They were found to be working at the centre in Damansara Jaya here about 4pm on May 30.
The duo were charged with violating Rule 9 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures Within Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2021, punishable under Rule 17(1) of the same regulations, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000, or imprisonment of a maximum six months, or both, upon conviction.
The court ordered the two accused to serve their jail terms starting from the date of their arrest on May 30.
During mitigation, the duo, who were unrepresented, pleaded for a light sentence, saying they have families to support back in their home country.
However, deputy public prosecutor Zamriah Zarifah Aris urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence. – Bernama, June 16, 2021
