GEORGE TOWN – Penang will use existing provisions under the Emergency (Essential Powers) Ordinance 2021 to seek the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to enable its state legislative assembly to reconvene immediately.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow in a statement said the application under Section 15 (1) of the ordinance will be made through the Penang Yang di-Pertua Negeri to the king.

“First of all, the Penang government would like to extend its best wishes for His Majesty’s concern and the need to hold parliamentary sessions.

“In this regard, the state government maintains that the same need arises in the state legislative assembly, where the emergency ordinance and the National Recovery Plan affects the running of the state government machinery,” he said.

Chow said the Dewan Rakyat and state legislative assembly are important platforms to debate various issues, especially those related to the prevention and control of Covid-19, apart from matters involving the allocation of expenditure aimed at reviving the country’s economy.

He said the state legislative assembly can convene immediately with standard operating procedures used during the sitting in October last year.

“The state government will never take risks and neglect its responsibilities regarding the methods and procedures that will be used to control the Covid-19 pandemic during the sitting.

“We will seek advice from the state Health Department and National Security Council, especially if the spread of Covid-19 is still high in Penang.” – The Vibes, June 17, 2021
