KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia today recorded 869 new Covid-19 cases – the highest daily tally since the pandemic began – taking the national total to 19,627.
“Total active cases stand at 6,886, with 91 in the intensive care unit. Of these, 30 patients are on ventilators,” said Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in his daily update on the coronavirus situation.
He reported another four virus fatalities, pushing the death toll up to 180.
“There are also 302 recoveries, bringing the total to 12,561.”
The four deaths are all Malaysians – three men, aged 53,78 and 88, and a 71-year-old woman – in Sabah.
Dr Noor Hisham said the fresh infections are all local transmissions, involving 745 Malaysians and 124 foreigners.
Four of them recently returned from Sabah, which has seen an alarming surge in cases following its state election last month.
Five new clusters were detected, with three in the Klang Valley and one each in Sabah and Terengganu. – The Vibes, October 17, 2020
