MIRI – Five more people have died in Sarawak due to Covid-19, even as fresh infection outbreaks hit two resettlement schemes and a longhouse with authorities reporting another 569 new infections today.

The state Disaster Management Committee secretariat said the deaths in Sibu involved two women aged 46 and 80, a 55-year-old woman in Kanowit, and two men aged 84 and 87, respectively, in Kuching.

“The latest fatalities bring the death toll to 378 in this pandemic in Sarawak,” the secretariat said in a press statement as it expressed condolences to the affected families.

Sibu recorded 131 new cases, followed by Sarikei with 83, Kuching with 74, Miri with 22, Kapit with 26, Bintulu with 47, and Meradong with 22, with other districts logging under 20 cases each.

Three new outbreaks were recorded, two in resettlement schemes and one in a longhouse.

The Mongkos 2 cluster in Serian district saw 22 villagers infected in their resettlement area, while the Tebakang Dayak cluster in Kuching saw 18 villagers hit by Covid-19.

The Sg Banun cluster in Meradong saw a longhouse going under lockdown when 20 people who participated in a social gathering were infected. State health teams are performing screenings in these areas.

The secretariat once again appealed for public adherence to all standard operating procedures to halt the infections and fatalities. – The Vibes, June 19, 2021
