KUALA LUMPUR – PKR leaders are reminded not to be blinded by the trappings of wealth and power, as these could veer them away from the party’s ideals and principles.
President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he has, in the past, warned that leaders should not be mesmerised by the glimmer of wealth and gleam of power, but some took offence at his remarks.
“If other people were the ones offended, I would understand. But this involves those in the reform agenda.
“This means that the spirit and idealism (of the party) are not observed. This is our problem, and it involves morals and ethics, and character,” he said in his winding-up speech at the PKR national congress, held virtually, today.
The Port Dickson MP said morality and ethics are PKR’s foundation, which is why it will not compromise on rejecting corruption.
“Does this mean that (PKR) can say, we have not been affected by these attacks? No, because not all would consider this (advice) and practise it when in power.
“We have struggled together in pain and suffering, where we have been productive and passed the test when challenged. But as soon as we are tested with a little bit of power, we become anxious and polluted when we lose power.
“We passed (the test) in times of trouble and suffering, but lose when given wealth and position.”
Some leaders have changed their character upon becoming ministers or council members, he said.
There are some representatives who are offended when they are not called ‘Yang Berhormat’. There are some who ensure their titles are not left out. What sort of culture is this, that places importance on the glimmer and paraphernalia of power from the struggle?”
He added that it is important for PKR leaders to reject evil, corruption, cruelty, and power abuse.
“If they are stronger, they would also reject vengefulness and limitless desires.”
Anwar reminded members that they must continue to work in the spirit of inclusivity, as the party comprises people of various races, religions and backgrounds.
The involvement of women in the party leadership has yet to reach the minimum level, he said, adding that young leaders must be given a chance to take on bigger roles.
The opposition chief said PKR members must be willing to accept the leadership of those who have been democratically elected to party positions, and give a second chance to those previously seen as “traitors”.
For example, those who were complicit in the ‘cartel’ before this, they must be given a chance to take part without preconceptions, unless they are evidently going against the party’s rules.
