BUTTERWORTH – Police are investigating after a video of a funeral in Jalan Siram here went viral, purportedly for violating the standard operating procedures for the current lockdown.

Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Noorzainy Mohd Noor said an investigation has been opened after a TikTok user named @budakpenang7 uploaded a video of the funeral.

In the one-minute video, a group of young Indian men is seen carrying a coffin for more than 50m to the Hindu cemetery in Jalan Siram on Thursday. There are also loudspeakers and drumming as well as banner-carrying.

Noorzainy said the deceased was a 23-year-old man from Telok Air Tawar near here who died at Seberang Jaya Hospital on June 16.

He added that police have narrowed down the identity of the account owner and asked those with knowledge of the video to come forward to facilitate investigations.

Noorzainy said the matter is being investigated under Section 269 of the Penal Code and the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988. – The Vibes, June 20, 2021
