BUTTERWORTH – An expanded online collection and English learning modules are being eyed by the Butterworth Digital Library, which plans to collaborate with the National Library and British Council Malaysia towards this end.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the tie-ups will allow consumers to enjoy diverse reading and learning materials, spurring education in the state.
The RM6.6 million facility is also a testament to Penang’s drive to become a digital economy hub, he said at its official launch.
The project is a partnership between Chief Minister Inc as the main investor, strategic partner Think City Sdn Bhd and building owner Seberang Prai City Council.
Despite the movement curbs imposed to stem Covid-19, the library has welcomed about 15,000 visitors, comprising mostly teenagers and young working adults, since it first opened its doors in July.
Taking up 1,580 sq m, the library boasts three levels.
The ground floor serves as a common work and/or reading area, with a “learning space” for children interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Level 2 is designated as a workshop space, while a cafeteria has been proposed for the top floor.
