KOTA MARUDU – Sonsogon folk can look forward to the start of their Covid-19 vaccinations as the state government has identified some 300 of them for the jabs.
PBS leader Datuk Seri Maximus Ongkili said in a statement that the vaccination outreach programme has started here, some 120km from Kota Kinabalu.
“There are more than 700 individuals from eight villages scattered within the Sonsogon’s hilly area, of which, some 300 will be vaccinated for now,” he said at the launch of a three-day vaccination programme at Kg Sg Magandai.
The Sonsogon are a subtribe of the Kadazandusun Kimaragan people.
Ongkili added that it is not easy for rural folk to get to towns for their jabs.
“The response has been a bit slow but encouraging, and we hope more will come forward tomorrow and the day after.”
A team of doctors, nurses and members of civil society groups has travelled to five Sonsogon villages here.
A total of 15,265 people here have registered for the vaccination via the MySejahtera app, and 6,018 have received the first dose and 1,949 have completed both their doses.
“Although the vaccine is not an antidote, at least it builds our antibodies to fight against the virus. We need to protect ourselves first to protect others. So, do not be afraid of the vaccine. It saves lives.”
At the event, Ongkili, who is also Sabah and Sarawak affairs minister, gifted a wheelchair and necessities, a donation from the Kota Marudu parliamentary and Tandek assemblyman’s offices, to a 6-year-old with special needs. – The Vibes, June 23, 2021
