THE use of electronic cigarettes, or vapes, has become a serious public health concern and requires urgent attention as part of efforts to protect public health, said Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.

He noted that although vaping was initially introduced as an alternative to address tobacco addiction, its usage now presents its own set of challenges.

“Vaping was originally intended to reduce tobacco consumption. However, some have used it to such an extent that the habit has become even worse than smoking. We are now facing a problem,” he said.

He advised the public to use health-related technologies and products with greater caution, especially when that use could lead to habits that are difficult to control.

“More and more people are using them now… in some cases, the use of vapes has become even more severe than smoking cigarettes. Therefore, we must be extra cautious with technologies like these,” he added.

Health education and public awareness must also be strengthened so that the community understands the importance of avoiding habits that could compromise their health.

The Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government also emphasised that disease prevention requires commitment from individuals, families, and the community, alongside ongoing support from the government.

Recommended measures include adopting a healthy diet, engaging in physical activity, managing stress, undergoing regular health check-ups, and avoiding smoking.

He said efforts to cultivate a healthy lifestyle should not be limited to specific campaigns; they should be part of daily life.

“Adopt a healthy diet, manage stress, avoid smoking, undergo health screenings early, ensure early detection of diseases, and keep the environment clean. These are all things we must do every day,” he said.

According to him, such sustained efforts are essential to ensure that the people of Sarawak can enjoy the state’s development while maintaining a better level of health and well-being. - October 19, 2026
