FORMER Setiawangsa Member of Parliament Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has confirmed that he was one of two individuals detained by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) during an incident in Petaling Jaya on Thursday.

The leader from Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama) explained that he and his associates had begun discussions at a studio in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, before deciding to continue in Petaling Jaya to review materials related to the project under discussion.

"At the time the JAIS officers arrived, only the woman and I were indeed present. I acknowledge that this was an offence."

"As I also informed the JAIS officer, we did not engage in any improper conduct that would give rise to suspicion," he said in a statement.

Earlier, JAIS Director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad confirmed that two individuals were detained to assist in an investigation into a case of khalwat (close proximity) involving a public figure in the Petaling district.

He stated that the arrests were made at approximately 6 pm.

Meanwhile, Nik Nazmi emphasised that he does not wish to prolong the issue and will cooperate fully with any legal proceedings.

"I would like to apologise to my wife, our families, and everyone affected by this lapse in judgment—an incident that should not have occurred.

"I also apologise to my party for disappointing its members and supporters, as this issue reflects poorly on the party; I will accept whatever decision the party makes.

"I hope all parties will respect the legal process and refrain from prolonging the discussion through the media," he said. – October 17, 2026
