BALIK PULAU – Police shot dead a man who allegedly charged at them with a machete during a search for him near the Bayan Lepas waterfalls at 3.30am today.

The raid was conducted after cops received a tip-off on the 34-year-old’s whereabouts.

When police found him, the man, wielding a machete, allegedly charged at an officer, leading to another cop shooting at the suspect twice.

Southwest district police chief Kamarul Rizal Jenal confirmed the incident, saying it is being investigated as attempted murder.

“When police arrived, the suspect attacked them with a machete, causing one policeman to be injured.

“In self-defence, a cop fired two shots at the suspect, who then collapsed. Police called for an ambulance, and the medical team that arrived pronounced the suspect dead.”

The body has been sent to Penang Hospital for a post-mortem.

Kamarul Rizal said the man, who was an unemployed local, had 22 previous records and was wanted over several cases, including drugs, break-ins and theft. – The Vibes, June 27, 2021
