GEORGE TOWN – Gerakan stalwart Datuk Kee Phaik Cheen and her husband Dr Choong Sim Poey have tested positive for Covid-19, and are now hospitalised with their two maids, who are also infected.

Gerakan veteran Wong Mun Hoe told The Vibes that it is believed the couple contracted the virus from a maid at their home in Lengkok Jesselton after picking up their weekly groceries.

Kee is a former Penang exco, while Choong used to be the president of the Penang Heritage Trust.

A viral message has been circulating reminding residents to be vigilant even after their vaccination, as the couple had received their jabs.

Kee, 74, was an outspoken state exco for tourism, instrumental in shoring up Penang’s reputation in the field of heritage, culture, arts, and food.

Choong, on the other hand, was a gynaecologist who helped Penang gain its Unesco World Heritage Site status during his time at the helm of the Penang Heritage Trust.

He is also credited for starting the conservation and preservation movement in Penang in the late 1990s.

Last week, two variant-of-concern cases linked to the Beta variant (B.1.351) were reported in Penang. Today, the state has 88 fresh Covid-19 cases. – The Vibes, June 28, 2021
