KUALA LUMPUR – Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi should be subject to disciplinary action for going against party decisions several times, said Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim.
Shahidan said those who violate the party’s decisions should be punished, but the Supreme Council has consistently kept mum on Zahid’s actions.
“Maybe they are not brave enough.
“This shows favouritism because people who have reprimanded the president before this have been punished and suspended from the party, such as (Datuk) Lokman (Noor) Adam and Tun Faisal (Ismail Aziz).
“However, the Supreme Council has kept mum over the president’s mistakes,” he said in a statement today.
Shahidan said the Umno General Assembly 2020 had made it very clear that the party will continue to support the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government until dissolution of Parliament.
During the assembly, it was reiterated that the party will not be involved in any political cooperation with PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and DAP, with the slogan “No Anwar, No DAP”.
“No one, including the Supreme Council, can overrule the assembly’s decision. If the decision has been amended, it must be through the assembly, not the Supreme Council.
“The party’s decision was based on a motion by (Perak Umno chief Datuk Saarani Mohamad), and it was confirmed by Umno vice-presidents that there were no amendments to the motion.
“Therefore, if there is an attempt from the Supreme Council to leave the government before Parliament is dissolved, it is an offence and actions should be taken against them,” he said.
Previously, Shahidan said Zahid had sent a letter to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, in which he stated that Umno MPs had given their unwavering support and trust to Anwar as the next prime minister.
“That is inaccurate and can be considered as having made a false statement to the Agong.”
Yesterday, Zahid roped in a number of Supreme Council members and had planned to call in the party’s parliamentarians in stages to gain their pledges of support and break its alliance with PN before the deadline set during the party’s general assembly.
Unconfirmed reports said Zahid received 30 signatures from 36 Umno MPs to withdraw support for the ruling coalition headed by Bersatu, which is led by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
According to a report by Utusan Malaysia, 10 parliamentarians had been called by Zahid to the Umno headquarters in Menara Dato Onn yesterday afternoon.
A source told the daily that deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan were present at the series of meetings. – The Vibes, July 3, 2021
