[UPDATED] Covid-19 cases dip slightly to 6,045, with 917 patients in ICU

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia logged 6,045 new Covid-19 cases today, a slight drop from the 6,658 infections yesterday. The total caseload now stands at 778,652.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the nation recorded 63 fresh fatalities, bringing the death toll to 5,497.

While most of the deaths today comprised adults and senior citizens, one of the cases involved a 13-year-old girl who died in Hospital Tuanku Jaafar, Seremban, who had a history of epilepsy.

In a statement, he said a total of 5,271 patients recovered today, while 917 are in intensive care, with 443 in need of intubation.

Selangor recorded the highest number of cases with 2,262, followed by Kuala Lumpur (616), Negri Sembilan (531), Johor (500), Perak (384), Sarawak (365) and Kedah (332).

States with fewer than 300 cases are Melaka (290), Sabah (228), Penang (173), Kelantan (124), Pahang (95), Labuan (75), Terengganu (54) and Putrajaya (16).

Perlis recorded no new infection.

Dr Noor Hisham said the 63 fatalities today involved 25 in Selangor, 15 in Negeri Sembilan, 10 in Kuala Lumpur, and 3 each in Johor and Kedah.

Penang and Pahang recorded 2 deaths each, while Sarawak, Terengganu, and Melaka saw one death each.

He said the country has seen a total of 2,918 clusters thus far, including 17 new clusters today.

A total of 2,049 clusters have ended, with 869 remaining active.

Dr Noor Hisham said 11 of today’s 17 clusters are related to workplaces, five came from the community, and one is a high-risk group.

Johor recorded the Jalan Wira Lapan workplace cluster in Johor Baru with 12 cases, the Industri Parit Jamil workplace cluster in Muar with 127 cases, the Industri Parit Hulu workplace cluster in Muar with 40 cases, the Jalan Perindustrian Agas 11 workplace cluster in Tangkak with 104 cases, and the Persiaran Kempas Jernih high-risk group cluster in Johor Baru with 14 cases.

Pahang logged the Km22 Jalan Gambang cluster in Kuantan with 11 infections and the Industri Bypass Gebeng workplace cluster with 52 cases, while Selangor registered the Industri Jalan Bangi Lama workplace in Hulu Langat with 79 cases, and the Lorong Empat Sekinchan community cluster in Sabak Bernam, Gombak and Hulu Selangor with 41 cases.

Kelantan saw the Pengkalan Baru workplace cluster in Pasir Mas with nine cases and the Kg Jeram community cluster in Pasir Mas with eight cases, while Penang recorded the Lorong Sg Tiram workplace cluster in Seberang Prai with 25 cases.

Sabah logged the Bahtera Barat workplace cluster in Kota Kinabalu with 18 cases, while Sarawak recorded the 35 Bintulu workplace cluster in Bintulu with 21 cases, the Sg Pelepak community cluster in Meradong with 26 cases, and the Sg Entajum community cluster in Tatau with 41 cases.

Finally, Terengganu recorded the Gong Pasir community cluster in Dungun with 29 cases. – The Vibes, July 4, 2021
