SEREMBAN – A total of 142 child abuse cases were recorded in Negri Sembilan in the first six months of this year, said the state Social Welfare Department.
Its director, Rosnah Sardi, said of the total, physical abuse topped the list with 85 cases, followed by sexual abuse (36), child neglect (13), emotional abuse (4) and abandonment (4).
“Physical abuse also recorded the highest number of cases for the same period last year, with 60 out of the 160 child abuse cases reported.
“The department also rescued 341 child abuse victims throughout last year. Child abuse is not something that we should take lightly, and it must be addressed immediately.”
She said the rescued children will be handed over to Eligible and Suitable Persons, who can provide them protection and look after their welfare.
The children will also be placed in any homes or safe spaces gazetted under Section 54 of the Child Act 2001 for a period of three years or until they reach the age of 18.
Rosnah said family spats due to drug abuse, financial problems and parental negligence are among factors leading to child maltreatment.
The department is taking steps to address these issues, including providing advocacy services to the families and children via nine Children Activity Centres in the state, she added.
