MEMBERS of the public who witness child abuse and film these abuses must give this evidence immediately to the police, said Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

The minister for women, family and community development said they should contact 999 and Talian Kasih 15999, which is run by the ministry.

“The immediate thing that the public must do when they see child abuse happening is not to react using social media.

“They must immediately call the police and Talian Kasih.

“Their swift response is crucial in getting help for victims of abuse.

“We must not think that social media is the first priority,” she said.

Speaking when launching the Love for Children campaign organised by SMK Agama Sibu and her ministry in Sibu town in central Sarawak, she said her ministry is doing more publicity on prevention of child abuses as these cases may be widespread.

“We are bringing these campaigns into the school levels too,” she said.

The campaign aims to educate parents, teachers and the public in general on the need to care for and love our young ones.

It also educates them to identify signs of abuse and to get swift help for victims.

SMK Agama Sibu is the first school in Sibu town to hold the awareness talks.

The campaign will extend to more schools in Sarawak. – August 4, 2024.
