GEORGE TOWN – Penang recorded a 48.2% increase in theft cases between January and June this year.

State police chief Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said a total of 768 theft cases were recorded, compared with 518 targeted threshold value cases, an increase of 250 cases.

“Police describe negligence and ‘opportunities’ that exist as the main causes contributing to the increase in theft cases in Penang.

“However, criminal cases recorded a decrease of 22.1%, with only 1,623 cases recorded compared with 2,084 threshold value cases,” he told a press conference at the Penang police contingent here today.

He added that, apart from theft cases, domestic violence cases recorded an increase of 239 cases as of last month, compared with 177 in the same period last year.

Meanwhile, Shuhaily, who was recently appointed to the post of state police chief on July 1, said he will not hesitate to take stern action against any police officers found to be negligent in their duties.

This month, he said, six police officers are facing disciplinary action for various offences.

“Three policemen have been detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), while another three are being investigated by the Integrity and Standards Compliance Department.

“All of them involve offences such as extortion, drug possession and corruption.” – The Vibes, July 14, 2021
