KUALA LUMPUR – Two teenagers were forced to sit under the scorching noon sun in Bukit Nyamuk, Johor, to get better internet connectivity to join online classes.
Nabilah and Nadia were spotted by Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik, who got out of his car to speak to them.
Nabilah told him that internet access at her house is weak, so she and Nadia moved to the front of the house.
“I was overcome with sadness upon hearing Nabilah’s explanation,” said Maszlee.
“I took the opportunity to speak to her teacher, Cikgu Izan. I realised that the teacher is dedicated to teaching her students, based on her vibrant voice and the material displayed on-screen.
“I’m sure Cikgu Izan was surprised with my sudden appearance on-screen to greet her.
“Nabilah and Nadia’s parents should be congratulated for their passion in supporting their children’s studies.”
He said he will continue encouraging telecommunications companies to bring their services to Simpang Renggam, including Bukit Nyamuk and Felda Layang-Layang.
“Students and teachers are ready to attend school, but the circumstances are not in their favour. We hope the circumstances will get better, and things can go back to normal soon.”
The efficacy of online teaching and learning has been hotly debated, and the question remains whether schools can reopen in view of Malaysia’s unceasing Covid-19 infections.
The Education Ministry is expected to announce whether e-learning will continue for the next school term. – The Vibes, July 16, 2021
