KUALA LUMPUR – The Covid-19 tally today declined to 10,710 infections, a decrease of almost 2,000 from yesterday’s caseload.
However, fatality numbers jumped to their highest ever at 153, from yesterday's 138, bringing the cumulative total to 7,019.
There were 5,778 recoveries, making a total of 784,949.
Of the total cases today, 909 are in intensive care units.
95 cases are critical, with ventilators, while 45 are on oxygen support.
91 have pneumonia, while 4,162 have mild symptoms, and 6,317 are asymptomatic.
Selangor accounts for 4,828 of the fresh cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur (945), Johor (808), Negri Sembilan (771), Kedah (696) and Sabah (666).
Perak saw 407 cases, Pahang (369), Penang (295), Melaka (289), Sarawak (261), Kelantan (146) and Terengganu (123).
Putrajaya logged 51 infections, Labuan (50) and Perlis (5).
The latest cases drive up the national total to 916,561 since the pandemic began.
On Twitter, Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that 123,386 Covid-19 tests were carried out in the past day.
An infographic attached to the tweet showed that 867,043 screenings were done in the past week.
Dr Noor Hisham said that 59% (6,317) of the infections today were Category 1 or asymptomatic, while 38.9% (4,162) were Category 2 or showed light symptoms.
There were 91 Category 3 cases, 45 Category 4 cases, and 95 Category 5 cases where patients were in critical condition and in need of breathing assistance.
Dr Noor Hisham said the country’s Covid-19 infectivity rate stood at 1.18 yesterday.
The highest is Terengganu (1.31), followed by Putrajaya (1.26), Kedah (1.25), Negri Sembilan (1.19), Kuala Lumpur (1.19), Penang (1.18), Selangor (1.17), Melaka (1.17), Perak (1.17), Sabah (1.15), Kelantan (1.13), Pahang (1.11), and Johor (1.10).
The 153 fatalities today involved 82 in Selangor, 17 in Kuala Lumpur, 14 in Negri Sembilan, and 10 in Johor.
Kedah recorded eight deaths, Pahang saw six, Melaka logged five, while Sabah, Penang, and Putrajaya saw two deaths each.
Terengganu, Sarawak, Kelantan, Perak, and Labuan logged one death each today.
There were a total of 17 new clusters reported today with 10 from workplaces, five from the community, one originating from a detention centre, and another from a high-risk group.
Selangor recorded the Industri Desa Aman cluster in Gombak and Petaling with 46 cases, the Industri Jalan Klinik cluster in Klang with 67 cases, and the Persiaran Pekeliling Bangi workplace cluster with 17 cases.
Kuala Lumpur registered the Jalan Segambut Duta cluster in Kepong with 39 cases.
In Johor, the Batu Enam Pandan cluster saw 12 cases, the Jalan Bacang 30 community cluster logged 15 cases, the Jalan Tasek Seri Alam cluster saw 17 cases, and the Jalan Denai Utama cluster recorded 14 cases. All the new clusters in Johor are in Johor Baru.
Kedah logged the Dah Padang Temusu cluster in Kuala Muda and Pendang with 36 cases, and the Dah Kg Kerchut cluster in Kubang Pasu with 25 cases.
Melaka registered the Industri Jalan Usaha 12 cluster in Melaka Tengah with 22 cases.
In Sabah, the Agathis cluster in Kalabakan saw 33 cases, the Sri Sandau cluster in Kinabatangan logged 11 cases, the Tembok Tawau Dua prison cluster in Tawau recorded 159 cases, while the Batu Tiga Utara cluster in Sandakan saw 20 cases.
Kelantan registered the Lorong MIEL Lundang workplace cluster in Kota Baru, Machang, and Tumpat with 6 cases while Pahang logged the Pos Iskandar community cluster in Bera with 36 cases. – The Vibes, July 18, 2021
